You’re probably familiar with seeing images of the Earth from space that seem two-dimensional with respect to how flat the earth’s surface appears. I thought that this photo was unique when I viewed it, because it’s possible to actually see the height of the Earth’s atmosphere from an angle. This image was taken from Discovery during the STS-96 mission in 1999. Click here for the high-resolution, full size version.

Jake writes in his Third Rail blog that the best day and time to post to your blog and be noticed is Thursday at Noon PST. Conspiracy theorists often accuse NASA, the US Air Force and sometimes even the President himself of actively obfuscating evidence relating to UFO or extraterrestrial visits to planet Earth. Well, here’s a case where NASA has done a good job, in my opinion, disproving a specific UFO claim that was associated with the Apollo 16 mission. In this case, the purported UFO in question turned out to be the EVA floodlight/boom used for spacewalks. See the related NASA page here for detailed images, diagram and explanation.

Ever think about how civilization is handed to each and every new generation? When each of us opens our eyes in this place, we are also opening our perception to the realities of our circumstances, and these realities can certainly vary depending upon where it is you open your eyes on this planet. In the West, no one would argue that we have it pretty good. Even our poorest live like kings compared to some poor in less fortunate countries. Quality water, sewer and electricity are typically not concerns, the product of the hard work of former generations, hardly requiring a thought. Four walls are commonplace. Even the poor among us find shelter (with few exceptions). Most of us live in homes, utilities provided, mail delivered, streets paved, store shelves stocked, protected by police, having a means of obtaining income, etc.

But did you ever think of breaking the mold and doing things differently, dropping out? Here’s an example of a family that decided just that.

Ever find yourself sitting around the living room, wondering what a particular person’s gravestone might look like? Maybe you don’t even know where that person lived or died, but damned it if you’re gonna that hold you back from seeing their final resting place! Well, there is a company out there that identifies with your pain, Findagrave.com. At the Find A Grave website, you can not only search the gravestones of famous individuals, such as celebrities, but also the graves everyday Joes, like the weird old guy that lived down the street when you were 12 in the old neighborhood. You know, the guy that yelled at you for cutting through his yard with your friends. The website is operated by Utah resident Jim Tipton. He started the site in 1995 because he could not find a website that catered to his hobby of visiting the graves of famous people. The site grew to what it is today largely through the help of 350,000+ contributors who submit new listings, updates, corrections, photographs and virtual flowers every hour. Do you need a new incentive to wash your hands correctly after using the bathroom? That’s right, correctly! Is there is a wrong way to wash your hands? Of course there is, you say. We’ve all seen it. People not washing hands before exiting the public bathroom (hopefully not food service staff, but anyway…), the quick splash (for looks only), or those that do wash but then grab the door handle picking up the germs of the last person who didn’t wash.

The Soap and Detergent Association and New York State Department of Health have teamed up to provide a new Handwashing Poster, and this poster offers a great tip for knowing that you’ve had your hands in the soap and water long enough.
